Victor Dog Food Buying Guide

Company Information

Victor is a dog food brand of Mid America Pet Food, which was founded in Texas back in the 1950s as a pet food manufacturer which also produced cat food and horse feed. The Victor products we know today have only been around since 2007 when it was acquired by the parent company, although as a brand it is thought to date back to the 1940s. The family behind Mid America Pet Food built their own pet food plant from scratch and remains within close proximity – no more than 200 miles – of over 80% of its pet food ingredients to ensure the quality of all their dog food.

As well as the freshness of their ingredients, the Victor brand also prides itself on the nutritional content of all their dog food products, which they refer to as ‘super-premium pet food’. High in protein, Victor is typically targeted at active dogs, large breeds and working canines. The three formulas in the Victor range are predominately dry kibble, although they do offer some wet dog food varieties. Grain free and life-stage formulas are also available. As a whole, the Victor dog food brand is the company’s best-selling range. They also manufacture Eagle Mountain Pet Food.

Why Choose this Brand?

Although not as widely known as some of the pet food global market leaders, Victor dog food is acknowledged for its quality and has a band of loyal fans and their dogs, who love the formula. This brand is high in protein and largely formulated to support the energy needs of larger breeds as well as active and working dogs so perhaps not best suited for small or toy breeds who lead a more sedentary life or where obesity is an existing or potential issue.

Victor can also be a good choice if your dog needs to be on a more restrictive diet due to food allergies or gastro issues or is a particularly fussy eater. All of the varieties in the Victor range are free from corn, wheat and soy as well as artificial preservatives, flavors and colors. All the ingredients are also GMO-free and with their commitment to traceable, local sourcing you can be sure of the quality and freshness of Victor Dog Food. As a premium dog food, the price point of Victor is also a draw, coming in generally cheaper than similar natural or high protein dog food products.

Ingredient Analysis

With a general dry kibble formula that aims to support your pet’s digestion and immune health, all of the Victor recipes are also high in nutrient dense protein, which makes the brand a good choice for high energy or active dogs. Protein ingredients include pork, beef and chicken meal as well as menhaden fish meal – meat meal and fish meal are a more concentrated form of protein than fresh, effectively boosting lean muscle and giving that energy-sustaining hit. Then there’s dried egg which is nutrient-rich.  While the formulas are carb and vegetable limited and there is no fruit, additional key ingredients include sweet potato, peas, chickpeas, flaxseed and chicken fat to get the nutritional balance Victor is aiming for.

However, there are a couple of ingredients which could raise an eyebrow or two, including tomato pomace, which is a by-product of processed tomatoes. While high in fiber, tomato pomace can also be seen as a filler, as can the added alfalfa meal. Blood meal – a by-product of the slaughter process - also appears in some of the recipes, and while by no means harmful for your pet, some owners may prefer to avoid it through personal choice.

As a range, Victor tailors its ingredients and recipes to create the three core formulas:

  • Classic: Balanced nutrition for active, high energy or working dogs and a healthy immune system. Includes high levels of protein, with many products in the range also grain free to support a healthy digestive system.
  • Select: For dogs at various life stages, to help sustain energy, manage allergies, and maintain a healthy weight. The various products also contain carefully selected proteins to support digestion and are available in grain free formulas.
  • Purpose: Formulated for dogs with particular needs, such as joint problems, weight management or low carb diet. The Purpose range is packed with nutrient-dense protein from multiple meats, including fish and are available in grain free formulas. Also includes recipes for puppies, the more senior dog and to improve performance.

Pros & Cons

Recognized for its premium ingredients and high protein formulas, Victor dog food has a growing reputation for quality nutrition as well as meal-time satisfaction for your pooch. We review what’s good and perhaps not so good about this brand:

Pros
  • Premium quality protein sources are at the heart of the recipes, designed to give your dog the energy boost they need for lean muscles, healthy immune and digestive systems as well as an active, healthy life
  • Many of the formulas are also suitable for older dogs as well as pets with normal activity levels
  • The large sized dry kibble bags – some of the Victor brand can come in bags of 50 pounds – means it is a long-lasting and so represents a good value brand
  • Quality sourced ingredients and the option for no grain formulas to keep your pooch’s tum and allergies under control. Great for picky eaters or dogs struggling to maintain weight too
Cons
  • Not suitable for all dogs and breed sizes. Formulated to support higher energy and active dogs, the Victor range could be too protein and calorie rich for the smaller dog, especially if weight or lack of activity is an issue
  • The size of the kibble may be too large for small dogs or younger puppies
  • Not as widely available as other brands. Victor is sold largely online so may be difficult to source from your local pet store
