I have a 4 year old boxer and she use to eat the brand “ Pedegree” dog food and she would have a hard time eating so sometimes she would cough it back up, food would fall out of her mouth, or some night (not very often) she would vomit. Then I decided to no longer feed her this food. After looking through many brands of dog food I found VICTOR and might i say I hit the jackpot you can tell a major difference in her energy and she doesn’t vomit, she can keep the food in and she has no problem eating. So far no complaints 10/10

Constantly trying to find the best food for my dog, since he has a sensitive stomach. He started with Nutro and then Hill’s science diet, and wasn’t having solid poops consistently, but with this one everything has been great. The black color and smell is a little off-putting though. Also, not sure if this matters but he’s not picky at all haha I know some dogs don’t love the taste, but haven’t had an issue with him

Is Victor a Good Dog Food?

For decent dog food at a reasonable price, Victor ‘Super Premium’ Dog Food has garnered a pretty good reputation. This isn’t a large glossy brand compared to others but is one that trades on its family business background and commitment to balanced canine nutrition, especially those with higher energy needs.

The quality of the ingredients can vary a little, although the company strives to use locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. And most of the recipes are based on meat meal rather than whole fresh meat, as meal can be easier on the digestion and contains more concentrated levels of protein. Victor also has a good range of grain-free options if your pooch is on the more sensitive side, however it has been noted that fruit and vegetables are on the low side when it comes to the formulations.

Looking at Victor Dog Food reviews, most customers seem happy or more than happy with their products, which are predominately dry food based, although there are a few wet food products recently added to the range. So, if your pooch lives an active lifestyle, thrives on dry dog food, and enjoys high protein food that is competitive when it comes to price, then Victor Dog Food is certainly worth a try. Victor sources all its core ingredients from local farms, ranches, and suppliers and which are GMO-free. The brand focuses on balanced nutrition and quality protein, with managed fats and carbs in all their formulas, which are also free of artificial fillers. All their recipes also include a special blend of supplements to support the high level of digestibility of the pet food as well as helping to enhance your pet’s immune system. Victor also has a more limited dry and wet cat food range.

While Victor is a relatively small pet food company, it is gaining a reputation for quality formulas at affordable prices while still retaining the reassurance of a small family set up.

Victor Dog Food states that over 80% of their dog food ingredients are sourced locally, all within a 200-mile radius of its manufacturing plant. The benefits of sourcing ingredients so locally are that they can track them to their sources, as well as reducing excessive transportation.

Product Lines – Differences and Which One You Should Choose

The Victor Dog Food range has three key product lines – Classic, Select and Purpose. It also has a fourth, ‘niche’ range called Realtree, which is tailor made for working and hunting dogs as well as a range of dog treats.

Each range includes grain-free formulas to support a healthy digestion as well as products for different life stages and activity levels.

Classic

The Victor Dog Food Classic line contains a balanced blend of protein, grains, and essential nutrients to support active or high energy dogs and puppies as well as promote their immune and digestive systems.

Select

Designed for dogs at all the life stages, the Select range contains nutritionally complete ingredients that help to sustain energy in all breed sizes. Victor Select can also be used to maintain a healthy weight and is also available in grain-free formulas.

Purpose

Purpose is Victor’s dog food range for pets with specific health needs, including joint health, low-carb, and weight management. Packed with high quality, energy sustaining protein, Purpose is also available grain-free.

Let’s Take a Closer Look at Ingredients

Overall, the ingredients found in the Victor Dog Food range are a good quality and chosen for the high protein (in the form of meat meals) and essential fiber, and carbs, with grain-free recipes also available.

To give you more of an informed view when you look at the Victor Dog Food packaging, here’s the lowdown on the main Victor Dog Food ingredients.

Protein

In most of their recipes, meat features in around three of the top five ingredients. And, as they use meal instead of whole meat, the level of protein is typically more concentrated.  The main sources of protein are the more commonly used beef, chicken, pork, salmon, and menhaden fish meal, with highly digestible dried egg also in some of the formulas.

Fats

The brand uses recognized forms of fat such as chicken fat (which also enhances flavor), flaxseed oil (an excellent source of omega 3) and canola oil. These fats are a good choice for your pet’s energy levels as well as their skin, coat, and general health.

Carbohydrates

To support the energy needs of active dogs, Victor Dog Food formulas have decent levels of carbohydrates, which include whole grain millet, oatmeal, sorghum, and brown rice. The range also includes grain-free formulas for dogs who may have more sensitive digestions.

Fruits and Vegetables

The lower levels of these ingredients are evident in the recipes, with limited plant-based ingredients compared to other dog food brands. The most common ingredients listed across the range are peas, sweet potatoes, organic dried seaweed meal and carrot powder.

VPRO Blend

Added to the Victor Dog Food range is their own supplement – VPRO blend – which includes prebiotics and probiotics as well as antioxidants and selenium yeast, designed to help support your doggo’s digestive and immune system.

Ingredients to be Aware of

Overall, the Victor range is a good quality dog food with a decent balance of nutrition aimed at active dogs. However, there are a few ingredients that need highlighting as they can be an issue for sensitive pets:

  • Tomato pomace – this ingredient is often used as a filler, although it is a source of fiber
  • Alfalfa meal – while fresh alfalfa is nutrient rich, it can cause nausea and gas in some dogs. And in its dehydrated form, it is often used to boost protein levels which may be better supplied via other animal-based sources.
  • Peas – peas and other legumes have plenty of nutritional value. However, there are some concerns about a potential link between the use of legumes in grain-free dog food and a rise in canine heart disease. If you are in any doubt, speak to your veterinarian.

Dog Food Recall History

To-date, Victor Dog Food has had no product recalls as far as we can find, which is impressive for a company that has been establishes for so long. It also shows that the brand takes dog food safety and manufacturing as well as ingredient quality seriously, which is a reassuring plus point for all dog owners.

Price

While not the cheapest dog food brand, research as part of our Victor Dog Food review has shown that for a quality dog food, it’s well-priced, coming in at mid-range. And the price is in line with the quantity you do get – much of the dry dog range is available in 30-50 pounds bags – means it can also represent good value for money.

To give you an idea as to what you can expect to pay, you are looking at around $52 for a 50-pound bag of one of its bestsellers, the Victor Classic Multi-pro, which is around the same price for a 25-30 pound bag of a more expensive premium brand, such as Taste of the Wild and Orijen. But there can be slight differences in ingredient quality between these brands. However, overall, we think Victor represents good value.

Which Types of Dogs is Victor Best Suited For?

While the Victor Dog Food range covers most canine nutrition bases, there are some dogs it’s better suited to.

The brand is good for most active and generally healthy pooches who want a delicious bowl of food and whose owners want to give them balanced nutrition at a good price. The high protein recipes can also be beneficial for larger breeds as well as dogs that are either working or high energy pooches. There are some products in the range that are appropriate for senior pets and as there is a limit on ingredients that can trigger allergies or upset the digestion, many of the Victor Dog Food recipes are suited to fussy eaters or more sensitive dogs.

However, with just a few puppy blends, and larger kibble pieces, your choice is a little more limited for very young dogs. And it’s here that the otherwise popular and respected brand may be missing a trick.

In a Nutshell, Is Victor a Good Choice?

Retailing at a reasonable price considering the quality ingredients, Victor Dog food is a good choice for dogs that like to lead an active life. However, there are some limitations when it comes to the range of ingredients used, in particular fruit and vegetables which, in some of the Victor Dog Food recipes, are distinctly lacking.

While the range may not be as extensive as other premium dog food brands, Victor does cover all the main bases of its target canine market – active or high energy dogs that need sustained quality nutrition. And the recipes are tasty and balanced enough to satisfy even the less active family dog. So, the verdict of this Victor Dog Food review is that the brand represents good value and offers well thought out nutrition to keep the average on-the-go pet healthy, happy and satisfied.
