this is the best dry food out there for your cats. If you’re like me and can’t really afford to break the bank for your cats (as much as i love them) this is the “least priciest” healthy kibble food out there. I say least priciest because it is still a bit expensive, but you get what you pay for. With this, my cats’ coat is thicker and shinier, they have mor is energy and their stools aren’t as smelly (and much less of it!). Love Fromm products.

Meanwhile, the mixed Mediterranean vegetable provides ample benefits from a healthy coat to better digestion.

Both my cats (one had been eating Nature’s Balance for three years, the other Friskies after she weaned) enjoy this food. It’s fresh and keeps them shiny and sleek. I don’t love the fish breath it gives them, but since they’re cats it only makes sense for them to smell a bit fishy. I do occasionally supplement this food with some Wysong Epigen canned cat food for a treat. No complaints in the litter box department–feces are not offensive at all. If I could just figure out a way to deal with all the urine, I’d be A-OK.

  • Primary Proteins: Salmon, Chicken
  • Calories: 425 kcal/cup
  • Flavor: Salmon, Chicken, and Whitefish

Our Premium Pick is based on the wide range of different food sources – and therefore the healthy diet – the Surf and Turf Fromm cat food provides for its buyers and their pets. Utilizing the best from both land and sea in chicken and salmon, you’ll find that your cat will find this high-protein cat food difficult to resist.

This option also has a few extra niceties for your cats, including Wisconsin cheese and whole eggs, which your purring pals will find irresistible. This particular choice does have a higher protein level, however, and forgoes a few fruit and veg in favor of the meats. While this is great for keeping your cat happy, it might make indoor cats a little skittish.

Ingredients:

Salmon, Duck Meal, Salmon Meal, Pea Protein, Chicken, Sweet Potatoes, Potatoes, Duck, Pea Flour, Dried Tomato Pomace, Chicken Fat, Dried Whole Egg, Salmon Oil, Flaxseed, Cheese, Pea Fiber, Carrots, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Apples, Green Beans, Chicken Cartilage, Taurine, DL-Methionine, Potassium Chloride, Cranberries, Blueberries, Salt, Chicory Root Extract, Alfalfa Sprouts, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid, Parsley, Sorbic Acid (Preservative), Vitamins, Minerals, Probiotics.

My cat loves this food. She used to be on strictly wet food but cried for it 8x a day. It wasn’t manageable. After switching her back to dry food, (she used to eat Earthborn) she seems much more satisfied and doesn’t beg for food as often. A 5lb bag lasts 3 weeks, so it is rather expensive, but worth it. I live in a small town and don’t have a pet store to buy acceptable food so I have to order off of amazon. She likes it, I like it, I would recommend it.

4 Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Chicken A La Veg Food

  • Primary Proteins: Chicken
  • Calories: 418 kcal/cup

Made with a simpler recipe and forgoing the combinations that can be found in other options in the Fromm dry cat food range, this is still a fantastic recipe that provides a balanced diet. A lower protein level makes this option more accessible to indoor cats, who can still enjoy the great flavors provided.

There’s also the added benefit of there being a greater variety of vegetables in this mix, which is better suited to elderly cats, too. Again, free of hormones or antibiotics, you’ll feel safe in the knowledge that your cat is getting everything they need from one of the better manufacturers on the market in Fromm pet food.

5 Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Beef Livattini Veg Dry Cat Food

Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Beef Livattini Veg Dry Cat Food
Key features:
  • Allergens: Beef Liver, Salmon Meal, Chicken Meal, Beef, Chicken Liver, Lentils, Cheese
  • First 5 ingredients: Beef Liver, Dried Egg Product, Salmon Meal, Chickpeas, Peas
  • Primary Proteins: Beef Liver
  • Calories: 426kcal/cup
  • Flavor: Beef
  • Type: Dry food
  • Life Stage: All life stages

Crafted for cats in all stages of life, Fromm’s Four-Star Nutritionals recipes are inspired. Their Beef Livattini Veg recipe is a grain-free cat food that offers the optimum ratio of omega fatty acids for your cat to enjoy. This is also an excellent choice for cats who are missing teeth or have a hard time chewing; the kibble pieces are fairly small and their triangular shape should make it easier for your cat to pick them up to eat them.

There’s no single high protein source in this meal. The protein comes from beef liver, salmon and chicken meal, and chicken liver. Beef, as its own ingredient, is 11th on the list. This could be a problem if you have a cat with a sensitive stomach but should be fine for cats who find that they can’t eat heavy meals. The other worrying ingredient is cheese, a strange addition because cats and dairy don’t typically mix.

Ingredients:

Beef Liver, Dried Whole Egg, Salmon Meal, Chickpeas, Peas, Dried Tomato Pomace, Pea Protein, Pea Flour, Potatoes, Beef, Pork Fat, Turkey Liver, Sweet Potatoes, Salmon Oil, Cheese, Flaxseed, Olive Oil, Carrots, Celery, Parsley, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Spinach, Zucchini, Eggplant, Salt, Chicory Root Extract, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Taurine, DL-Methionine, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid, Sorbic Acid (Preservative), Vitamins, Minerals, Probiotics.

What others say about it:

There are several varieties of this food, all of which are very good and some of which may not work for every cat. My Commander Fluffypants seems to enjoy this food more than other recent choices, but it may just be because he is almost out of teeth. These kibbles are very tiny and easy for him to eat. He doesn’t vomit from it, and his output is soft but formed, which is good for him. However, the stink will wake you up from across the house.

6 Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Salmon and Tuna Pate Canned Cat Food

Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Salmon and Tuna Pate Canned Cat Food

  • First 5 ingredients: Salmon, Fish Broth, Tuna, Chicken Liver, Whitefish
  • Primary Proteins: Salmon, Tuna
  • Calories: 166 kcal/can
  • Flavor: Salmon and Tuna

Let’s switch from dry food to wet cat food for a moment and have a look at a product from the canned food line that Fromm offers. Still part of the Four-Star Nutritionals line-up, this canned food is a Salmon and Tuna pate that is perfect for cats of all breeds, ages, and sizes. If your cat is a fan of tuna but you worry about feeding them canned tuna because of the possibility of mercury poisoning, Fromm’s Salmon and Tuna pate could be exactly what you need to stock in your household.

Boasting ingredients that are all 100% USDA inspected, this all-natural canned pet food for cats uses ingredients like taurine to give an extra health kick to your cat’s meal. There are actually very few ingredients in the Salmon and Tuna pate, so you can be sure that your cat isn’t eating a bunch of weird filler ingredients when they chow down on finely minced salmon and tuna cooked in fish broth. Please note that, despite the lower calorie count, this is not a diet-type cat food. Wet cat food is often lower in calories when compared to a cup of kibble because there’s less of the wet food.

Ingredients:

Salmon Broth, Wild Salmon, Tuna, Ocean Fish, Chicken Liver, Pea Fiber, Tomato Paste, Potato Starch, calcium sulfate, taurine, choline chloride, salt, potassium chloride, vitamin e supplement, iron chelate, zinc chelate, niacin supplement, vitamin a supplement, calcium pantothenate, potassium iodate, riboflavin supplement, manganese supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin d3 supplement, sodium selenite, thiamine mononitrate, copper chelate, vitamin b12 supplement, folic acid, biotin. Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein: 8% Min Crude Fat: 2% Min Crude Fiber: 1.5% Max Moisture: 79.5% Max Taurine: 0.1% Min

We just adopted 2 senior cats, and they haven’t been eating any of the canned foods that I have tried. The male was hardly eating at all. A friend gave me a can of this, and they both loved it. I’m trying to feed a diet of grain free food that is made in the US, and this fits the bill. They get Taste of the Wild dry food and like that which I give them twice a day. I’m going to feed them this once a day. The cost is the only negative but as long as they eat it, I will buy from Amazon.

On your search for the best cat foods available in the Fromm range, we’d like to highlight this very decorative-looking grain-free food that cat owners could choose for their kitties. Cats with food sensitivities, such as grain allergies, will often have issues eating off-the-shelf dry cat foods. That’s where this French-inspired grain-free entree from Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals comes into play.

Fromm are more than a good cat food brand. They provide a range of dry and wet cat food alternatives that any kitty can eat. The Chicken au Frommage recipe, for example, has chicken as its main source of protein, and then goes on to use a range of vegetables and fruits to pack every meal with goodness. One ingredient that standards out is chicory root extract, known for nourishing the friendly bacteria in your cat’s digestive system and helping them digest food.

Ingredients:

My two cats can’t get enough of this food. I had a small sample that I got from the story and they ate it all up, but when I went back to the store they didn’t have it and I know that I would find it out on Amazon. I would recommend this brand and product.

8 Fromm Gold Adult Cat Food

Fromm Gold Adult Cat Food
Key features:
  • Allergens: Chicken, Chicken Meal, Salmon Meal, Cheese, Chicken Liver
  • First 5 ingredients: Chicken, Chicken Meal, Pearled Barley, White Rice, Salmon Meal
  • Primary Proteins: Chicken
  • Calories: 395 kcal/cup
  • Flavor: Chicken
  • Type: Dry food
  • Life Stage: Adult

Our first Gold product of Fromm’s recipes on this list, adult cats will benefit greatly from this balanced blend of proteins and wholesome ingredients. Gold recipes are produced alongside the other dry food formulas that are made at Fromm’s family-owned facility, but they’re a little different. You can expect a Gold product to be high in nutrients and easy to digest. Fromm Family Adult Gold Food for Cats is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance, meaning that it’s a great everyday food for your cat to enjoy, not one for weight loss or weight gain. Provided that your cat is exercising as they should be, they will be able to maintain their current weight while eating these cat food products.

Fromm’s Gold formula for adult cats uses chicken cartilage. This may seem like a strange addition for a cat food recipe, but there are benefits to it, such as its ability to support joint health. This isn’t the only semi-problematic ingredient, though. There is real Wisconsin cheese in this product, which is featured in a few cat food products in the Fromm foods brand. Though the cheese is considered very popular, it’s still a dairy product that has lactose in it, which cats aren’t supposed to eat much of. We wouldn’t recommend feeding a cat food with cheese in it to a cat that has a sensitive stomach.

Ingredients:

Chicken, chicken meal, pearled barley, white rice, salmon meal, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), dried tomato pomace, dried egg product, potatoes, duck, salmon oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), cheese, flaxseed, brewers dried yeast, chicken liver, alfalfa meal, dl-methionine, potassium chloride, Vitamins [choline chloride, Vitamin E supplement, niacin supplement, ascorbic acid, calcium carbonate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, Vitamin A supplement,. calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin D3 supplement, biotin, Vitamin B12 supplement], chicken cartilage, chicory root extract, salt, monosodium phosphate, Minerals [zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, ferrous sulfate, magnesium sulfate, zinc proteinate, ferrous proteinate, manganese proteinate, copper sulfate, magnesium proteinate, copper proteinate, calcium iodate], sorbic acid (preservative), yucca schidigera extract,. sodium selenite, taurine, dried Pediococcus acidilactici fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus plantarum fermentation product, dried Bifidobacterium longum fermentation product.

9 Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Duck and Chicken Pate Canned Cat Food

Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Duck and Chicken Pate Canned Cat Food
Key features:
  • Allergens: Chicken, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver
  • First 5 ingredients: Chicken, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Duck, Flaxseed
  • Primary Proteins: Chicken, Duck
  • Calories: 169 kcal/can
  • Flavor: Chicken and Duck
  • Type: Pate wet food
  • Life Stage: All life stages

With finely minced chicken and duck cooked in chicken broth, this delectable pate canned cat food will have your kitten coming back for more at every mealtime. Like the other pate recipe that you’ll find above in our cat food reviews, Fromm’s Duck and Chicken pate has minimal ingredients and few common allergens (provided your cat isn’t sensitive to chicken). The pet food industry is full of recipes that use an abundance of fillers and foods that aren’t very allergy-friendly, so it’s nice to see that Fromm really does take a lot of care to reduce the allergens they use.

A notable ingredient in this wet food is flaxseed. Flaxseed is used to provide omega-3 fatty acids in cat food and can help your cat maintain healthier skin and a shinier coat. This is also the job of salmon oil, which is why you’ll see salmon oil a lot in the dry and wet foods that Fromm produces for cats. The brand uses the same ingredients in their kibble and canned dog food because both work as well for dogs and they do for cats.

Ingredients:

Chicken, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Duck, Flaxseed, Tomato Paste, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Minerals, Xanthan Gum, Dried Egg Product, Locust Bean Gum, Taurine, Vitamins.

What others say about it:

Is Fromm a Good Cat Food?

From aiding healthy digestion to the inclusion of fresh fruits in their meals, Fromm has certainly created a brand that considers the needs of canines and felines in their day-to-day lives. Fromm cat foods are varied, with all of their Four-Star Nutritionals being suitable for any age of cat. This is an excellent thing for cat owners because it means that if you find a Four-Star cat food that your cat enjoys, you won’t need to switch them to another product as they get older. Choosing a cat food is often one of the more difficult things about owning a cat, particularly once you start to understand what is and isn’t good for a cat to have in their diet.

Fromm cat food products are an excellent choice for any cat owner to switch their kitty to. There’s a good variety of foods available, and Fromm caters to grain allergies, which many off-the-shelf pet store brands don’t do. Our individual cat food reviews of their products got into more detail about allergens and the benefits of some of their foods, but we can safely say that this is a pet food brand that cares.

The Short History of Fromm Company

Set up in 1904 with a focus on pet health and wellbeing, Fromm was the first company to develop the distemper vaccine through years of research and sound science. It wasn’t until the 1940s, however, that their focus turned to pet food. Being a well-known leader in pet nutrition by this point, they pioneered the blend of quality meats and grains together to create some of the world’s first kibble.

The company is now in its fifth generation of family ownership, and each generation has been focused on providing the very best in pet health – including a major contributor to pet health, by way of pet food. Their focus remains on finding high-quality sources of meat and vegetables for each recipe, so your pets can live long, happy lives.

Where is Fromm Cat Food Made?

Based in Wisconsin, Fromm values their business highly and spends their time focusing on long-term products, rather than making a quick buck with snappy buzzwords and short-term entries to the market. This means that you can be sure that your Fromm food is not only sourced and made in the USA but that any food you place in your pet’s bowls will still be available on the shelves, in-store for generations to come.

Cat lying near food bowl

Where Do They Source Their Ingredients From?

A statement on Fromm’s website declares that they do not source or use any ingredients from China because of reports of food safety violations. Other than this, there is no information about where Fromm sources their ingredients. They do, however, tell their customers that they are subject to random inspections by the FDA and USDA, as well as the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Past customers have managed to reach out to Fromm in the past, and they seem very open to sharing where they source their ingredients when asked. It’s just a shame they don’t include the information for the public to easily access.

Product Lines – Differences and Which One You Should Choose

Like their canine products, there are the main three product lines of Fromm Family, Gold, and Four-Star Nutritionals. However, if you look at the selections of cat food on the Fromm website, there’s a fourth product line called “Purrsnickety”. Purrsnickety falls under the Fromm Family recipes, so it’s not technically its own product line… More of a sub-product line..

  • Fromm Family recipes include the original Cat-A-Stroni canned foods and Purrsnickety. These are high-quality canned foods that offer complete and balanced meals. Cat-A-Stroni are stews, while Purrsnickety are a line of pate products.
  • Gold is a line of cat foods with various select proteins and wholesome ingredients. The recipes in this line are life-stage specific, and there’s even a recipe that is a diet-type cat food.
  • Four-Star Nutritionals is about variety. Each recipe is suitable for all life stages but there are more flavors to chose from, as well as grain and grain-free choices.

Choosing a product may seem difficult at first, but we highly suggest checking out the cat food reviews that we’ve written in this guide, as well as the informational pages that Fromm provides on their products and ingredients. If you’re still not sure, you can’t go wrong with the all-rounder that is their Four-Star line.

Let’s Take a Closer Look at Ingredients

Dried Tomato Pomace

This is a dried mixture of tomato skins, pulp, and crushed seeds. It provides an excellent source of antioxidants and soluble fiber – soluble fiber can help gut bacteria, it improves digestion, and helps with stool regularity.

Duck Meal

Duck meal is the clean, dried, ground tissue of a duck. The amino acids that this animal protein provides are used to maintain muscle, repair tissue, help with hormone synthesis, and more.

Pea Flour

Pea flour is comprised of dried peas that are ground into fine flour. It’s a great source of protein, carbohydrates, and antioxidants.

Pea Protein

A natural, vegetable-based protein powder made from yellow peas. It’s very digestible and is rich in essential amino acids.

Sweet Potatoes

Pets love these potatoes because of their sweet taste, but they’re also a great source of energy, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Fromm Cat Food Recall History

To date, there is no history of any of Fromm’s cat food products being recalled.

Price

The price will vary because Fromm offers their cat food products in bulk. You can buy several sizes of their dry pet foods, ranging from a 2lb bag to a 15lb bag. To give our readers an idea of what they can expect from From Family’s pricing, below are some current prices on gofromm.com:

  • Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Salmon and Tuna Pate Canned Cat Food, case of 12 = $28.45
  • Fromm Gold Adult Dry Cat Food, 10lb bag = $34.36
  • Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals Chicken au Frommage Dry Cat Food, 15lb bag = $55.89

Where Can I Buy Fromm Cat Food?

There are a huge number of pet stores across the United States where you can procure your own Fromm Family pet food. These include Petsense and Pet Supplies Plus, but many of your local neighborhood pet stores may stock their cat foods, too.

You can also find Fromm’s cat food products on Amazon, but you can’t buy them from the Fromm Family website. Instead, when you select the “buy” option on any of their products, you’ll be given three options: gofromm.com, PetFlow, and Incredible Pets.
