Are calming collars safe for cats?

Many calming collars are switching to the holistic approach and using essential oils and pheromones, instead of potentially harmful chemicals. While we don't advise feeding a calming collar to your cat, it is certainly fine for them to wear one.

This is entirely dependent on the collar that you choose. On average, most cat collars last for 30 days with continuous use. Some last longer, up to 60 days. The best cat calming collars tend to be water-resistant, meaning they can be used for outdoor and indoor cats. They can also be used in the bath. Though your cat may use the collar as an excuse to get out of one! Water resistance will help the collar's effects last longer - including during bath times!

Each collar has a different recommended timescale. As a general rule, it is best to assume the collar will need replacing after 3-4 weeks. Particularly if you need the calming effect to be at its best at all times. Some people like to keep calming collars on their cats 100% of the time. If your cat really struggles with anxiety, then this could be an option for you. You'll want to do an immediate swap from the old collar to the new once the 4 weeks is up.

If you have noticed that your cat's odd and stress-fueled behavior has continued, even after using calming products for a week or two, it is best to approach your veterinarian. Hissing, scratching, excessive grooming, loss of appetite, and general irritability can be the result of a problem that requires medical attention. This does not necessarily mean that it is life-threatening, but it never hurts to get a professional's opinion on the matter. Your vet can tell you whether their behavior is being caused by something that requires treatment.
