Temaril P is a canine medication that is primarily intended for the symptomatic management of canine itching and other clinical manifestations of histamine-mediated reactions. It also works as a cough suppressant regardless of the cause or the origin of the non-cardiac cough. One of its primary ingredients also helps in the reduction of inflammatory processes.
Temaril P contains two active ingredients that work together to reduce the various symptoms associated with allergic reactions or hypersensitivity reactions. These include the following.
- 5 milligrams of 10-[3-(Dimethylamino)-2-methylpropyl] phenothiazine tartrate or otherwise known as Trimeprazine, an antihistamine
- 2 milligrams of Prednisolone, a corticosteroid
The Trimeprazine component of Temaril P gives it an amazing antitussive and antipruritic action while its Prednisolone component exerts its biochemical properties on the reduction of inflammatory responses to give your dog the relief it needs from pain and discomfort associated with swelling and other signs and symptoms of inflammation.
Temaril P, owing to the presence of Prednisolone, is a prescription only medication for dogs. It is especially formulated for use in kennel cough as well as other forms of inflammatory and hypersensitivity processes deemed appropriate by your veterinarian. It only comes in a single formulation for dogs. If you wish to use it on other pets, you’ll need to consult with your vet first.
The clinical indications of Temaril P tablets for dogs are directly related to the mechanism of action of its two principal components. Being both and antihistamine and anti-inflammatory, you can thus, expect Temaril P to be indicated in the following canine conditions.
- Itching and other manifestations of acute inflammatory skin conditions in dogs
Dogs that are suffering allergic reactions with skin changes as its primary presenting signs and symptoms can benefit from the administration of Temaril P. The drug has been shown to reduce the intensity, severity, and frequency of itching to bring relief to dogs. Otitis media, otitis interna, and allergic, pustular, parasitic, and nonspecific dermatitis are often manifested by severe itching. Giving your dog Temaril P can substantially reduce the intensity and severity of the pruritus.
However, it is critical to understand that this is only symptomatic treatment and thus, is not definitive. The actual cause of the itching must be addressed. Otherwise, itching will recur once the Temaril P has been discontinued.
- Kennel cough, bronchitis, tracheobronchitis, allergic bronchitis, and respiratory issues with cough as the main clinical manifestation
Dogs suffering from kennel cough can also benefit from the anti-inflammatory and antitussive action of Temaril P. It has been shown to be effective in the reduction of cough intensity and frequency brought about by a variety of conditions in the respiratory tree primarily those affecting the bronchial tree and the trachea. Respiratory conditions such as allergic bronchitis, tracheobronchitis, and upper respiratory tract infections are all known to produce cough.
Coughing is almost always a sign of airway irritation. It is considered as the body’s defense against the presence of something foreign in the airway. When foreign particles – bacteria, fungi, dust, dirt, debris, and others – attach to the walls of the airways, forceful contractions are initiated to expel these particles out. As such, while suppressing the cough mechanism can bring comfort to your dog, it doesn’t get rid of the cause of the cough. In fact, some vets actually don’t recommend an antitussive as it suppresses the natural defense response of the dog to expel whatever it is inside its airways that is irritating it. That said, measures must be taken to identify and effectively manage the cause.
However, cough of cardiac origin, often as a result of cardiac insufficiency, will not respond to Temaril P no matter how much you increase the dose. Cough of cardiac origins are often an indication of edema in the lungs. The canine heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs for distribution to the rest of the dog’s body. If the heart is unable to move this blood forward into the body, it creates pressure in the lungs which effectively leads to what is called pulmonary edema or fluid-filled lungs. The alveoli in the lungs are literally ‘drowning’ and this sends electrical impulses to the brain to initiate the cough mechanism in an effort to remove the ‘fluid’. This is an entirely different mechanism in itself and as such Temaril P will be ineffective.
- As an adjunct to antibiotic therapy
Dogs that are receiving antibiotic therapy or any other chemotherapeutic agent for bacterial infections can also benefit from the anti-inflammatory properties of Temaril P. Antibiotics effectively kill the causative bacterial organism while Temaril P can help in the reduction of the inflammatory processes secondary to bacterial infections in canines. As such, Temaril P can be an excellent adjunct to antibacterial therapy.
With the above-mentioned indications of Trimeprazine-Prednisolone, you can readily identify the many benefits it can give to your dog. These include the following.
- Improved comfort
The reduction in itching means your dog won’t have to scratch every now and then, allowing it to have a more peaceful and undisturbed sleep and rest. This also allows your dog to enjoy playing as it will not be bothered by the itchy feel on its skin.
- More restful sleep
Coughing during sleep significantly reduces the quality of rest for your dog. By suppressing the cough reflex, Temaril P can allow your dog to have a more peaceful and restful sleep as it won’t be bothered by the incessant coughing. This can also have significant implications for you as its owner. At least, you won’t have to put up with the incessant cough.
- Keeps the skin intact
Because the intensity and severity of the itching is reduced, your dog will also have less chance of cutting or breaking its skin. This can help prevent cuts and wounds which can expose your dog to secondary bacterial infections. At any rate, you don’t have to worry about other skin problems anymore.
- Shortens the period that your pooch is sick
When used as an adjunct to antibiotic therapy, Temaril P can substantially shorten the length of time that your dog is sick. This is because as the antibiotic kills the causative organisms, Temaril P goes to work reducing inflammation which effectively reduces the strain on your dog’s immune system, thus, aiding in faster healing.

How Temaril P Works
It is quite easy to understand how Temaril P is able to provide all of these benefits. One only needs to look at how the individual active ingredients work to get an idea of the canine drug’s effectiveness.
This chemical is a derivative of the antipruritic substance known as phenothiazines. Its primary mechanism of action is as an antihistamine. Because of this, it may also exert other antihistaminic effects such as sedation. As an antihistamine, Trimeprazine is able to reduce the severity and intensity of skin itching in dogs as well as in relieving the symptoms of nasal congestion and other allergies. It specifically binds to histamine receptors so that these substances will not be able to exert their physiologic effects. Histamine is a substance that is released into the bloodstream during an allergic reaction. Since Trimeprazine negates the action of histamine, the occurrence of the signs and symptoms of allergy is thus, subdued.
Prednisolone is a type of corticosteroid that bears a striking resemblance to the natural hormone produced by the adrenal cortex. Its primary function is in the reduction of inflammation by blocking the synthesis of pro-inflammatory substances as well as mediators of an immune response. In effect, what it does for your pooch is that it reduces the severity of the inflammatory process.
Potential Side Effects
It should be made clear that the antihistamine and corticosteroid function of Temaril P can also produce a variety of side effects. For its Trimeprazine component, side effects can include:
- Muscle weakness
- Sedation, and
For its Prednisolone component, the following side effects may be observed:
- Bloody diarrhea
- Delayed wound healing
For dogs that are hypersensitive to one or both components, an allergic reaction may be noted. This can be manifested by difficulty breathing, the occurrence of hives, and swelling in the dog’s face, tongue, or even lips.
If Temaril P is used for a long time, it is possible that its Prednisolone component can cause Cushing ’s syndrome in dogs which is typically characterized by increased thirst, increased frequency of urination, and increased hunger pangs. This can also lower the resistance of the dog against bacterial and viral infections, making it more susceptible to such attacks.
Things You Should Know about Temaril P
Temaril P is available in tablet form, containing 5 milligrams of Trimeprazine and 2 milligrams of Prednisolone. It is approved by the FDA for use only on dogs and thus, should never be given to cats or even to humans. If you need to discontinue Temaril P, you need to do it gradually as abrupt discontinuation can lead to rebound effects. For example, if you are giving your pooch a tablet twice a day, then you need to reduce the dose first to half a tablet for several days before going for a half-tablet once a day dosing. The drug should also be administered with food to lessen the risk of upsetting your dog’s stomach.
What You Should Tell Your Vet before He Prescribes Temaril P
If your pup is pregnant, you should inform your veterinarian about it as studies have shown Prednisolone can lead to a variety of congenital anomalies in unborn puppies including cleft palate, anasarca, front leg deformities, and phocomelia. If Temaril P is administered to dogs in their last trimester, there is a high risk for premature delivery of the puppies which can lead to problems in the tonicity of the uterus of your dog, possible puppy death, and even retention of placental fragments. This can lead to increased uterine bleeding or even inflammation of the uterine muscles.
If your dog has a fungal or viral infection, you need to tell your vet, too, as these conditions already put a lot of strain on the canine immune system. If you give Prednisolone now, its immune system will be reduced even further, allowing the viral or fungal infection to become more severe. Other contraindicating health problems include diabetes and others.
How to Give Temaril P to Your Doggy
The full dose of Temaril P should be given to dogs in 4 days, after which the dose should be reduced in half. As a rule, you need to give a dose that is appropriate to your pet’s weight regardless of whether it is for its kennel cough or its intense itching.
- ½ tablet twice a day – for dogs that weigh up to 10 pounds
- 1 tablet twice a day – for dogs weighing 11 to 20 pounds
- 2 tablets twice a day – for dogs that weigh between 21 and 40 pounds
- 3 tablets twice a day – for dogs that weigh more than 40 pounds
As we have already said, this dosing should be observed in the first 4 days of therapy. On the 5th day, the dose should be reduced in half and continued for a certain period as determined by your veterinarian.
Make sure to store Temaril P in a cool and dry place with temperatures not going beyond 77oF.
What to Do If You Miss a Dose
In case you missed giving your dog its Temaril P, you have to administer as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for its next scheduled dose, simply skip the missed dose and proceed with giving the next dose. Do not double up on the next dose, however, as a means of compensating.
What to Do in Case of Temaril P Overdose
If your dog is having seizures or is excessively drowsy, chances are it is experiencing Temaril P overdose. Bring your dog to the nearest emergency veterinary clinic at once.
Some Drug Interactions
If your hound is currently taking herbal supplements, vitamins, sedatives, pain medications, or any other drug, make sure to consult with your veterinarian first. Examples of canine drugs that may react with Temaril P include Deramaxx and Rimadyl among others.
When it comes to intense itching and kennel cough in dogs, Temaril P can provide fast and effective relief. However, its corticosteroid component requires you to be very vigilant about possible side effects and adverse reaction.
