I just got this today. It’s adorable, fits my dog perfectly, and I think it will keep her warm without it being too bulky. I put it on her twice today, and it was (relatively) easy to get her in and out of it. Zipping it up was no problem at all. I really like that I can attach her leash directly to the vest so I don’t have to put a harness on. Her measurements were in the xl range for neck and length and in the large range for chest, so I sized up, which worked out. I uploaded a picture of her wearing it!
Pros
  • Very warm and comfortable
  • Easy to put on and off thanks to the snap button
  • No skin or fur pinching due to protective guard on the zipper
Cons
  • Extra care is needed when measuring to get the right fit
  • Not well suited to powerful pullers

I have a little 11lb Chaweenie and I got the jacket for him. I live in Seattle so it’s drizzly out all the time and he liked it eventually (haha) and wears it when he goes outside and in the rain. The one that I got which I believe was the medium was a tad tight but it could be because he’s half doxy and that his chest is bigger. I wouldn’t necessarily think that it would fit that way on all dogs like a little wired hair terrier and breeds like that. I think that the coat is well made. I was surprised at how reflective the little bitty reflective stripes were. Try to remember that it’ll fit best around their neck if you fold the color down and don’t wear it up like Elvis! 😁
Pros
  • Reflective stripes for visibility in low-light conditions
  • The elastic material in the chest makes it fit easily
  • Steady rope prevents the jacket from coming off
Cons
  • Sizing is not very accurate; the jacket runs too small
  • On the thinner side, not suitable for extreme cold

Though this may sound awkward, it is a great way to ensure a proper fit and limit the possibility of your pooch wiggling free. Also, as a nice bonus, the fleece vest is both washing machine and dryer safe.

I have a 10.7 lb chorkie. The medium is a perfect fit for him. I would have expected the small for him, but I used the measurements and chose medium. It fits perfect and I think he can grow to the 12-13 pounds the vet expects. He’s only 6 months old now. So I think he will grow more. It’s Not hard to get on and off and keeps his chilly, shivering self a bit warmer on cold mornings. He’s 6 months old and never worn a shirt, but he seemed to be just fine with it.

My pup Spencer loves his jacket (even though he look mad in the pictures lol). My lil man suffers from arthritis & usually when he goes out in the winter he just comes back in and is down for hours under his blanket. But with his new coat he is running around the yard again chasing things & rolling in the grass and snow. Now he comes in and continues to play & has pep in his step. This jacket give him his confidence back. The jacket is nice and thick but he can move well. The hood sometimes comes over his eyes but a head shake will move that or flip it inside out. The snaps are quickly done and undone but are strong. And the jacket is 100% waterproof. Easy to clean.
Pros
  • Bright, stylish, and cute design
  • The hood helps to protect the dog’s ears
  • Easy to put on and remove
Cons
  • Not fully waterproof material
  • Not available for larger short furred dog breed

Didog Reflective Dog Winter Jacket

  • Nylon outer material with fleece inner

A highly flexible yet weather-resistant and warm design. The Didog Reflective Dog Coat is a fantastic choice for dogs that live an active lifestyle. To provide a snug fit, the coat also comes with Velcro closures beneath the chest and neck for easy adjustment.

There is also a leash hole for the leash to pass through, as well as a reflective line for low-light visibility and safety. The open bottom with minimal wraparound has its pros and cons. For dogs that do a lot of running around this design means they will have a wide range of movement. However, it may not be the best design for senior dogs with limited mobility as the open bottom exposes their belly to the cold.

We spent a lot of time measuring our dog. This was the only coat that fit her unique measurements. We ordered an XXL for our 40 lb Briquet Griffon rescue mix. It covers down to her tail, is easy on and off and very durable. The only thing is that there is no opening for a harness on the back of the coat. But, we find that we can put her harness over the coat with no problems. There is an opening for a collar/leash in the neck area of the coat. Love the soft warm lining, water resistance (she’s dry when coming in from the rain), and reflective piping along both sides. We’ve used it with and without the elastic bands that go around the hind legs. It stays on either way if she is just going out for a walk. If she’s scrambling around the yard, the elastics help to keep it centered on her back. We are happy with this purchase!
Pros
  • Great for all weather conditions
  • Easy to wear and take off
  • Washing machine safe
Cons
  • The reflective strip could be bolder
  • The open bottom may not suit more sensitive dogs

That being said, the sizes apparently tend to run a bit small, so be careful when measuring your dog and take a close look at the recommended size chart to ensure you’re getting the right one. This jacket does come with double D rings for easy leash attachment, with the zip located on the back where your pup can’t get to it.

Very nice winter dog jacket. When correctly fitted, the design around chest and neck prevents wind from entering jacket. I’m using this in cold, windy, Northern Michigan with a older short haired dog that does not tolerate cold. After owning many winter dog coats this one is working. It’s a little longer than most on the rear legs which also keeps him warmer. Adjustable back length is convenient for dogs that must have their tail in the up position. I’m not using the elastic straps on the rear legs and not having a problem with the coat staying in place. The only issue I have is that the adjustable chest strap doesn’t want to stay in position – which I could fix by making the adjustment permanent. The dog seems to like this jacket better as he actually stays outside longer – and with his tail wagging.
Pros
  • fully weatherproof construction
  • Easy to both put on and take off
  • Easy to clean and maintain
Cons
  • The exposed legs are not ideal for dogs with joint problems
  • The fabric can be torn if the dog likes to go into bushes a lot

Best Dog Winter Coat Buying Guide

With so many lovely winter dog coats available for purchase, finding the right one for your four-legged companion may be challenging. Luckily, you’re in the right place as in this buying guide we show you exactly what to look for. And if you’re buying a canine coat for the very first time? We also share some tips on how to train your dog to wear their brand new winter jacket!

What to Look for in a Dog Winter Coat

Water-resistant fabric and insulation

Winters tend to be cold and wet, so the first thing to look for in a dog coat is waterproofing capabilities. You should take a critical look at the material the dog coat is made of. Both water-resistant and waterproof materials are good options, but it’s also important to look for properly insulated vests and coats as this is what will keep your pup warm during cold weather. Soft fleece padding is also always a good feature and is especially important if you live in a region with harsh winters.

Maintainance

It’s a good idea to choose a coat that is easy to clean and wash. Machine washable jackets tend to be the ideal design. However, models that need to be hand-washed are just fine too. Just try to stick with something with relatively durable fabric to save you the fuss of having to be extra-delicate with it. Durability is important to save you having to do a lot of repairs, but just be mindful that the fabric isn’t too stiff as it could cause rubbing.

Design

Last but not least, you should pay attention to the design of the jacket. For example, if you have an active dog, you should pick a jacket that is easy to put on and take off. If your dog is not so active, then a design that provides more coverage may be more appropriate. Zippers can get your dog’s fur caught in them so you should mindful of this – buttons or velcro fasteners would be preferable for long-haired dogs; however, zippers are perfectly fine for short-haired breeds.

Comfort

All dogs like to run and play and it’s important to choose a coat that won’t restrict their movement. A quality jacket will be both warm and comfortable, able to allow your dog to move and play freely. For example, if a model has sleeves, they should not bruise your dog’s arms or pinch their fur. Also, the fit should not be too tight or too loose. Instead, the coat should be easy to wear, meaning it should be easy to put on and take off and your dog should be able to walk with ease while wearing it.

Dog with jacket

Benefits of Dog Winter Coats and Jackets

Winter can be brutal on any animal, and canines are no different. Even though dogs have fur which provides some protection against the elements, many pooches need extra protection in very cold and wet conditions. That is where dog jackets come in handy. Weatherproof and insulted, they provide extra protection and warmth for all dogs, especially the short-haired breeds. Older and sick dogs are especially susceptible to the cold, and warm winter vests and jackets can help keep them protected, meaning they don’t have to skip out on a good bit of exercise just because the weather has turned.

FAQs:

Dogs have fur that protects them against harsh weather conditions. Jackets are just a precaution for when the fur is simply not enough in extremely cold temperatures. While long-haired and cold-weather breeds may not need coats, shorter-haired dogs, as well as puppies, seniors, and sick dogs may benefit greatly from wearing them during winter.

Ultimately, you will have to measure your dog with a measuring tape and compare the numbers to the size chart of the jacket you want to buy. You can also use some string and a ruler. Here are some tips for measuring:

  • Measure around the upper neck of your dog
  • Measure the lower neck of your dog
  • Measure the widest part of your dog’s body
  • Measure the length – i.e. from the beginning of the chest to the end of the hind leg or tail.
  • For jackets with sleeves, measure around your dog’s legs too.

You should aim to teach your dog to wear jackets right from puppydom for the best result. That said, it is not too late to teach them when they are older either; however, this is something that requires patience and a lot of rewarding. Here are some key tips:

  • Begin with simple, easy-to-wear vests.
  • Let your pup sniff and touch the vest so they can see it’s nothing to be afraid of.
  • Once they’re comfortable, wrap them in the vest and offer plenty of positive reinforcement.
  • Let your pooch wear their jacket for a short while; just a few minutes to start with.
  • Whenever your dog is in the jacket, praise them and offer them doggy treats.
  • Do this as many times as necessary until your pet seems fine and comfortable wearing the jacket.
  • Gradually reduce the number of rewards you give your dog for wearing the jacket, so they learn that the vest is now a part of their lives.

Some coats are machine washable, while others need to be hand-washed only. It’s important to check the label on your dog’s jacket so you can care for it properly. A piece of advice – always wash your dog’s coat in cool water to prevent the fabric from shrinking or fading.
