Baytril is a type of antibacterial preparation that is effective in the management of a variety of bacterial infections in both dogs and cats. The active ingredient of Baytril for dogs is Enrofloxacin. It belongs to the class of antibiotics known as fluroquinolones and come as tablets for easier administration, although it is also available in an ear drop formulation for ear infections in dogs and cats. Baytril for dogs requires veterinary prescription and as such should be used according to the vet’s directions. It is duly approved by the FDA in the control of susceptible Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. It is this broad spectrum of antibacterial activity that it is one of the most preferred antibiotics for dogs.

Indications

Currently, Baytril for dogs is indicated in the management and treatment of the following.

  • Urinary tract infections

Lower urinary tract infections are common in dogs in as much as they don’t have the capability to efficiently clean their urinary meatuses right after voiding. This leads to the introduction of E. coli and species of Proteus and Staphylococcus into the urethra. If this is not addressed immediately, the infection can spread towards the dog’s bladder and ureters until it reaches the kidneys where pyelonephritis may occur. Other causes of UTI in dogs include species of Streptococcus, Corynebacterium, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas.

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Skin infections are quite common in dogs especially those that are highly active outdoors. They are at risk for cuts on their skin which inadvertently introduce resident skin bacteria into the underlying structures of the epidermis. The most common bacteria that cause skin infections in dogs include Staphylococcus pseudointermedius and species of Streptococcus, Acinetobacter, Micrococcus, Pesudomonas, and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus.

  • Infections of the GI tract including the liver

There are many causes of infections of the gastrointestinal tract in dogs. Almost all pathogenic bacteria and viruses present in food can produce inflammatory changes in the digestive tract resulting in a host of symptoms. Bacteria can also produce canine hepatitis. These typically include Klebsiella pneumonia and Escherichia coli.

  • Pneumonia

Canine pneumonia is mostly caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida, Klebsiella pneumonia, Streptococcus zooepidermicus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and species of Mycoplasma. These mostly affect the terminal bronchioles of the dog’s respiratory tree, although it is not uncommon to find them in the alveoli as well.

  • Infections of the prostate

This type of infection is more common in unneutered dogs as well as older dogs. It is often due to Escherichia coli, Brucella canis, and species of Mycoplasma, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Proteus, and Klebsiella. It is characterized by cloudy or even bloody discharge from the dog’s penis, fever, straining during defecation or urination, and the presence of blood in the pooch’s urine, among others.

Giving the right Baytril dosage to your dog can provide the following benefits.

  • Faster resolution of susceptible bacterial infections

One of the most striking characteristics of Baytril for dogs is that it can kill susceptible bacteria in as short as 20 minutes after exposure to Enrofloxacin. It is also exceptional when it comes to killing both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Studies also confirm that it possesses excellent bactericidal properties in both the growth and stationary phases of bacterial replication. In other words, when you give Enrofloxacin to your dog, you can be sure that it will kill the bacteria that are causing the infection a lot faster than other types of antimicrobials. Generally, Baytril for dogs is primarily effective in the control of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Staphylococcus intermedius, although a host of other bacterial species are especially susceptible to its bactericidal activity.

  • Easier administration and more accurate dosing

Baytril for dogs comes in Taste Tabs formulation, allowing it to be administered to pooches a lot easier. In fact, studies have shown that 73 percent of all dogs treated with Baytril for dogs voluntary ingest the tablet. This means that you won’t have any problems administering the canine antibiotic to your pet.

How Baytril Works

Baytril for dogs is a brand of antibiotic that contains Enrofloxacin as its active ingredient. Enrofloxacin belongs to the class of drugs known as fluoroquinolones that exert their bactericidal or bacteria-killing action by preventing the replication of bacterial DNA. As everyone knows, the DNA of any living organism is where the instructions are ‘written’ or coded as to how different structural proteins should be arranged to form another cell. The DNA of one bacterium is encoded to form another bacterial cell. If the process is halted, then there is no way that the bacterium can replicate itself.

Specifically, Enrofloxacin acts on a variety of enzymes that are responsible for the unwinding and duplication of bacterial DNA. These include the topoisomerase IV enzyme as well as the DNA gyrase enzyme. When the Enrofloxacin interferes with the activity of topoisomerase IV, it leads to better coverage of Gram positive bacteria by creating DNA fragmentation. Activity against DNA gyrase results in the inactivation of Gram negative bacteria. In simple words, Baytril for dogs prevents bacteria from making copies of themselves.

Potential Side Effects

While Baytril for dogs can be an effective antibiotic in the management of canine infections caused by susceptible bacteria, it does carry quite a few mild to moderate side effects. The following are Baytril side effects that you must be aware of.

  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea
  • Canine cataract if used in the long term
  • Seizures especially in dogs with existing conditions of the central nervous system

However, if any symptom of hypersensitivity reaction is noted, Baytril should be discontinued immediately and emergency veterinary consultation should be immediately sought. The most common signs of an allergic reaction can include hives, labored breathing, swelling in the throat, and swelling of the face.

Things You Should Know about Baytril

Baytril for dogs is an FDA-approved antibiotic that is primarily intended for the killing of susceptible Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Prescription is a fundamental requirement for such antibiotics. It is available in 3 formulations: 22.7, 68, and 136 milligram chewable tablets. Enrofloxacin should never be given to puppies that are between 2 and 8 months of age for small and medium sized breeds and between 2 and 12 months of age for larger canine breeds. For puppies of giant dog breeds, Enrofloxacin should not be administered to puppies that are between 2 and 18 months of age.

If your pooch is pregnant you should tell your vet since Enrofloxacin has been shown to have adverse effects on the growing and developing bones and joints of still-unborn puppies. The same is true in puppies in their rapid stage of development as we have already described above. Baytril for dogs should be administered with caution in pooches that are known to have disease conditions of the central nervous system, liver, and kidneys.

How to Give Baytril to Your Mutt

The recommended Baytril dosage is 2.27 milligrams to 9.07 milligrams per pound of your dog’s body weight. The resulting Baytril dosage is then halved and administered 12 hours apart. If you have to give sucralfate or an antacid to your dog for the treatment of another condition while it is also on Baytril therapy, it is imperative that these drugs be administered no sooner than 2 hours within Baytril administration. Additionally, you are not supposed to give Baytril to your pet dog within 2 hours of giving it dairy products as well as vitamin and mineral supplements. You are also expected to give your pooch plenty of water to drink to aid in the elimination of the active metabolites of Enrofloxacin.

What to Do If You Miss a Dose

In cases where a Baytril dose was missed, it should be administered at once as soon as you remember it. If, however, the tiem you remembered it is already close to your dog’s next scheduled dose, simply skip the missed dose and proceed on giving the next scheduled one without doubling the dose.

What to Do in Case of Baytril Overdose

Baytril overdose can occur if you double up on the Baytril dosage in an attempt to make up for a missed dose. If severe vomiting and diarrhea are noted from your dog, it is crucial that it be brought to a veterinary emergency facility. The same action is expected if any symptom or sign of an allergic reaction is observed from your pet.

Some Drug Interactions

Enrofloxacin has been shown to interact with antacids, sucralfate, aminoglycosides, theophylline, cephalosphorins, penicillins, nitrofurantoin, rimadyl, other NSAIDs, and cyclosporine. Technically, if you are giving your canine friend a nutritional or herbal supplement or any other OTC medication or preparation for dogs, it’s best to talk this over with your vet.

Baytril for dogs is an effective antibacterial agent that promises faster resolution of bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. It is relatively safe, although adverse reactions and hypersensitivity reactions can also occur. It is very easy to administer further improving its therapeutic effectiveness.
